It's been far too long since I have dusted off my dive computer Suunto and disappeared from my job for a while. I think it's important to get away at every possible opportunity. Being burnt out is no way to live. I have gone through several phases in my life in regard to this. Now that I am a little bit older and have the chance to look back on it all, I have come to the conclusion that work, even the work that you are passionate about, really is the least important thing you can do with your day. Sadly, it is necessary though.

For anyone who argues that work is not a necessary evil, my question to them would be how else am I supposed to afford to do what I want to do in my leisure hours? How else do you ge the air tank, the fins, the dive computer Suunto, and everything else that you need to experience your freedom. Freedom isn't free. I have heard that expression used in many contexts. It works in this one just as well.
I used to want nothing more than to be a beach bum. I enjoyed a lifestyle with few responsibilities in it. I enjoyed the ability to be able to take off for somewhere if I wanted to. I like being able to put on my dive computer Suunto on any given day and head out to sea. So, I wound up doing things like finding work at tourist locations, usually as an instructor of some sort. Either surfing or scuba, I can teach either one. That kind of work depends heavily on the season though. even if the weather is nice all year round, my particular experience was that people tend to go in for certain activities in specific times of the year. I have wondered sometimes if there are resorts out there that experience steady traffic the entire year through. But that information is for other adventurous souls to decipher at this point.
So, where did my aspirations of leading a simple life in the water, wearing a dive computer Suunto disappear to? The need to be responsible caught up with me as it catches up with most. It started with a woman that I wanted to spend more time with. She was the first one who made me want to come in from the sea. The first who made me want to put that surf board away, take my dive computer Suunto off my wrist, get the air tank off my back, retire the fins… You get the idea.
Not forever though. I do tend to be loyal to my passions. I have to get some time in both on my board on top of the water as well as diving underneath it. But lucky for me, she not only understands, but joins in. Especially as far as the scuba is concerned. She has grown to enjoy it almost as much as I do.
I came in for her. She goes out for me. I can no longer be an irresponsible beach bum. That is the trade off for this life. You can't truly build a future with someone if you are not secure. It was a good trade though. I still get to wear my dive computer Suunto every now and then.
